Dinner seemed to have taken forever. Feeding Oscar had taken hours—or so it had seemed to Jason. He’d had a cockstand all day. He had seen to Maggie, Dickson and Alf. The men had eaten in the tap room and Maggie had been given broth in her room. She was looking a little better, but he suspected she was drowsy from the laudanum. He had refused the opiate.
